Pop Music


Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the United States and United Kingdom during in the middle of 1950s. The terms "popular music" and "pop music" are often used interchangeably, even though the former describes all music that is popular and includes many different styles. "Pop" and "rock" were roughly synonymous terms until the late 1960s, when they became increasingly differentiated from each other.

Although much of the music that appears on record charts is seen as pop music, the genre is distinguished from chart music. Pop music is electic, and often borrows elements from other styles such as urban, dance, rock, Latin and country. However, there are core elements that define pop music. Identifyng factors include generally short to medium-length songs written in a basic format (often the verse-chorus structure), as well as common use of repeated choruses, melodic tunes, and hooks.



The Definition of Pop Music

According to David Hatch and  Stephen Millward, pop music can be defined as “a body of music which is distinguishable from popular, jazz and folk musics”. Although pop music is often seen as song-oriented on chart music, not only pop music that included on chart music, but also from different genre musics such as classical, jazz, rock, and novelty song. Pop as a genre usually considered a genre that exists and develops separately. It’s aimed to young age and an alternative of rock and roll music.


History of  Pop Music

Pop music has been a profitable industry in the United States since the 19th century. In the late 1950s, pop/rock genre appeared after the waning of the rock and roll era. In the early stages influenced by the beat and rock and roll style (and sometimes doo-wop), but it's not too hard like rock and roll. Towards the end of the 1960s, the genre of pop/rock began to be affected by psychedelic and blue-eyed soul. In the 1970s, pop/rock grew more gentle, such as pop music performed by Burt Bacharach. popular pop/rock artist of the 1960s for example The Beach Boys, The Four Seasons, The Everly Brothers, The Association, The Rascals, The Righteous Brothers, The Walker Brothers, and Petula Clark. Composer Burt Bacharach, producer Phil Spector, and Brill Building songwriting team such as Barry / Greenwich and Goffin / King were among 1960s pop/rock figures.
